The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) has recently announced the allocation of more than $2 million in grants towards four crucial projects in Somerset County. This funding, secured by Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar and Sen. Pat Stefano, aims to ensure access to safe and clean water for the residents of the county.
Rep. Metzgar emphasizes the importance of this funding in upholding and surpassing sanitation standards, as well as protecting the well-being of the community. He states, "Pennsylvanians must have access to safe, clean water. This funding is crucial to uphold and exceed standards for the sanitation, protection, and well-being of our communities."
The first set of funding comes from the COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, specifically the H2O PA - Water Supply, Sanitary Sewer, and Storm Water Projects Program. This program was established under Act 54 of 2022, which allocated $205.4 million to support the construction of drinking water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater projects.
Sen. Stefano expresses his excitement about the assistance provided to the Confluence Borough Municipal Authority, which will receive $921,173 for a new water system connection. He recognizes the significance of safe and reliable water for public health and highlights that "replacing and rehabilitating these older systems is a vital measure to prevent waste and accessibility issues in the future."
The second set of funding is also derived from the COVID-19 ARPA funds, specifically the Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program. Act 54 of 2022 allocated $105.6 million for the construction, improvement, expansion, rehabilitation, or repair of water supply systems, sanitary sewer systems, and stormwater system projects.
Several projects in Somerset County have been awarded grants through this program. The Borough of Boswell will receive $428,447 to restore a storm wastewater sewer system. The Upper Stonycreek Joint Municipal Authority will receive $420,702 for the replacement of sanitary sewer lines in Hooversville Borough and Stoystown Borough. Lastly, the Meyersdale Municipal Authority will be granted $402,461 for improvements to the sanitary sewer system.
These grants signify a significant step towards ensuring the well-being and accessibility of essential services for the residents of Somerset County. With the support of Rep. Metzgar and Sen. Stefano, these projects will address critical infrastructure needs and contribute to the overall welfare of the community.
The awarded funding is a testament to the commitment of the Commonwealth Financing Authority and the General Assembly in prioritizing the improvement of water supply, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems. Through these investments, Pennsylvania continues to demonstrate its dedication to the health and prosperity of its residents.
