The Pennsylvania Senate has approved a proposed piece of legislation aimed at addressing false emergency threats targeting schools. Senate Bill 96, backed by Senator Pat Stefano, is poised to introduce new felony penalties for those who make fake emergency reports concerning educational institutions. Under this legislation, such acts would be categorized as a third-degree felony. Courts could also impose monetary penalties to compensate taxpayers for the government's expenses involved in responding to these hoaxes.
"The safety of our community is paramount. This legislation is a critical step in holding malicious actors accountable, best protecting our schools and supporting our first responders by ensuring they are not burdened with the false threats of a prank," said Senator Stefano.
The bill was prompted by an increase in false threats against schools throughout Pennsylvania, which have been causing distress among students and parents, while also diverting emergency resources from legitimate situations. One such incident occurred at Laurel Highlands High School in Fayette County on March 29, 2023.
The effort to combat these hoaxes is part of a larger initiative to secure schools and ensure accountability for those responsible for malicious acts. Having successfully passed the Senate, Senate Bill 96 now awaits consideration in the House of Representatives.
