Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar of Somerset has announced that the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will spray for fall cankerworms and spring moths in Somerset County. This decision follows extensive discussions between Metzgar and the DCNR, addressing the widespread defoliation caused by these pests over recent years.

Metzgar emphasized the importance of aerial treatments to protect forests from Lymantria dispar dispar, commonly known as spring moths, and fall cankerworms. "As warmer temperatures approach, it is crucial for forest landowners and woodlot owners to start considering aerial treatments to protect trees from the devastating effects," said Metzgar. He highlighted the significant threat these pests pose, having already destroyed millions of trees.

In response to this crisis, Metzgar has led efforts to assist landowners with a comprehensive plan. This includes providing a list of trusted aerial applicators, a suppression guide, and coordinating with expert foresters for planning and treatment processes.

Key information provided for landowners includes identifying light tan eggs laid by female moths between June and July. The recommended treatment period is during May when caterpillars are small. Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) and Tebufenozide (Mimic) are suggested treatments.

Metzgar stressed urgency due to limited applicators and a narrow treatment window, advising scheduling services promptly. He also mentioned resources available such as an egg mass surveying guide, a list of certified aerial applicators, a suppression guide, and contact information for expert foresters in Somerset County.

“These destructive worms have already cost landowners thousands of dollars in efforts to protect their properties,” stated Metzgar. With DCNR's involvement, he hopes landowners will find more affordable options alongside necessary guidance and support. The program enables private landowners to coordinate spraying efforts with DCNR’s initiative.

“Together, we can protect our forests and preserve the natural beauty of our area for future generations.”
