Corsa Coal will cease its operations in Somerset County, Pennsylvania by the end of the week. The company announced the layoffs of 332 employees in connection with its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings initiated in January.
State Representative Carl Walker Metzgar and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry Secretary, Nancy A. Walker, addressed the situation with statements aimed at assisting the affected workers. Metzgar stated, "I know this time creates uncertainty for the employees of Corsa Coal and their families. I have contacted Governor Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s Rapid Response team to ensure impacted employees have the necessary services readily available to them". His office has offered support for unemployment claims and other queries.
Secretary Walker emphasized the broader impact of the job losses, saying, "When workers suddenly lose jobs that provide family-sustaining wages and benefits, the ripple effects are felt throughout our communities". The Department’s Rapid Response team is in cooperation with Corsa Coal’s parent company, Wilson Creek Energy, to assist the impacted workforce. An informational meeting scheduled for April 8 aims to connect workers with necessary resources and job opportunities, demonstrating the state’s commitment to protecting its workforce during challenging times.
Representative Metzgar's office, located at 1808 N. Center Ave., Suite 200, Somerset, is available to provide assistance to those affected.
