Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar and various state and local officials, along with veterans and community members, gathered to honor Tec 5 Kenneth J. Newcomer by dedicating a bridge on East Campus Avenue over U.S. Route 219 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County. The dedication ceremony took place at the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department.
Metzgar stated, "We are able to enjoy our way of life because of Tec 5 Newcomer’s bravery and selflessness," adding that it was an honor to join the community in paying tribute to the fallen hero from Somerset County. He emphasized the high cost of freedom and expressed gratitude for Newcomer's ultimate sacrifice.
Tec 5 Newcomer, one of nine siblings, enlisted in January 1944 and served with the U.S. Army Second Engineer Combat Battalion, Company C during World War II. He participated in D-Day operations and was killed in action on October 9, 1944, in Belgium. For his actions during the battle for Hill 192 in June 1944, he was awarded the Silver Star for bravery under fire.
Before his military service, Newcomer also contributed to national efforts as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps as a teenager. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, signage has been installed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on the bridge bearing his name.
