HARRISBURG - Rep. Ryan Warner (R-Fayette) has introduced legislation that aims to address the issue of child rape and sexual assault. Recognizing these crimes as some of the most heinous in society, Warner's proposed bill would allow for the death penalty to be imposed on those convicted of such offenses.
In a statement, Warner emphasized the devastating effects that sexual crimes against children have on victims. He stated, "Sexual crimes committed against innocent children cause an unimaginable level of trauma from which no one can fully recover." Warner firmly believes that the punishment for such acts must reflect the horror of the crime itself.
The bill, which takes inspiration from a recently enacted law in Florida, presents a framework for sentencing individuals convicted of child rape or involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child. Under this legislation, a sentencing hearing would be held, and a jury would determine whether the defendant should receive the death penalty or life imprisonment.
Warner's proposed legislation is a direct response to the urgent need for enhanced protection for Pennsylvania's children. He stated, "We must do all we can to protect our children from this sort of evil." By introducing this bill, Warner aims to utilize all available tools to safeguard the well-being of children in the state.
The proposed legislation has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further consideration. As discussions progress, Warner's bill will undergo a thorough evaluation with the goal of ultimately ensuring that the punishment for child rape and sexual assault is commensurate with the severity of the crimes committed.
