County of Fayette issued the following announcement on Mar. 11.
Fourth-graders in Marshall Elementary's Save the Turtles Recycling Club petitioned their principal to start a recycling program.
The future of Fayette County, PA is bright! Students at G. C. Marshall Elementary School in the Laurel Highlands School District were surprised when a Fayette County Recycling Program drop-off bin unexpectedly arrived this week.
As members of the school’s Save the Turtles Recycling Club, they recently delivered a hand-written letter and petition to their principal, Dr. Jessica Scott, requesting help with starting a recycling program. Scott shared that request on social media, where it eventually reached Fayette County Recycling Coordinator Sheila Shea - and the rest is history!
“I’m trying to teach them about leadership and taking an active role in their community,” Scott said. “They delivered this idea in a full-blown pitch that they came up with themselves and had their whole class sign the petition.”
Shea said it “melts her heart” to know local youth “want to make a difference” and are learning about “standing up for a cause they believe in.” She also said the “stars aligned,” as the recycling bin unexpectedly became available just a few days after she saw the students’ plea.
In addition to the bin, students also received 12 recycled voting machine cases that they will decorate and turn into recycling bins for their classrooms. Scott said students are currently working on recycling posters for their hallways and planning a community cleanup.
Club members include fourth-graders Adelina Perez, Sophia Sweitzer, Arabella Sweitzer, Amiyah Cicconi, Lily Myers, Addison Forsythe, Virginia Martin, Sidney Glover and Brooklynne Smith.
