Senator Pat Stefano and Representative Carl Walker Metzgar have announced that Somerset County will receive state grants totaling $265,000. The funds were awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to support two key projects in the area.
Meyersdale Borough has been allocated $225,000 to address issues with an eroded levee embankment. This erosion currently poses a risk to a significant portion of the borough's flood control system during high-water events from the Casselman River. Senator Stefano emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “Safety is paramount, and this funding allows Meyersdale Borough to restore the flood control system and safeguard the homes, businesses and families who depend on it.”
The grant for Meyersdale Borough was provided through the CFA’s Flood Mitigation Program. This program supports projects that are authorized by various agencies such as a flood protection authority or identified by local governments for flood mitigation purposes.
In addition to this, $40,000 has been granted for constructing an amphitheater and stage at the Remember Me Rose Garden. This project aims to serve as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks, particularly aboard United Airlines Flight 93. It will also function as a recreational venue linked to the Flight 93 National Memorial. “This project further advances Flight 93 National Memorial’s mission... creating a meaningful space for community events,” said Stefano.
Funding for the amphitheater was secured through CFA’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program. This initiative supports developments in public parks and recreational areas.
Both projects received funding through the CFA, which is part of Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development focused on economic development and community improvement programs.
