The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has allocated over $2.3 million in grants to enhance internet access in Fayette and Somerset counties. This funding aims to improve broadband infrastructure and ensure consistent access across the state, as stated by Sen. Pat Stefano (R-32).
"Improving our broadband infrastructure and ensuring consistent, high-quality access throughout the commonwealth has proven to be a large feat that becomes more critical every day. Internet accessibility is essential for everything from education to health care," Stefano remarked. "I’m pleased to see this funding come to projects that will expand access to rural communities and make strides in improving each area’s quality of life."
The grant is part of a larger $45 million initiative funded through the federally backed Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program. It supports projects that aim to enhance high-speed broadband access for essential services such as work, education, and health monitoring via community anchor institutions.
This investment targets schools, libraries, recreation centers, and nonprofit organizations, ensuring these facilities continue serving as vital public resources.
To maintain transparency and track progress, PBDA mandates grantees submit quarterly and annual reports detailing project advancements and adherence to federal standards. A final report is required within three months after project completion, summarizing the grant's impact, sustainability efforts, and equity considerations. The last 10% of funding will be released following a thorough review of this report.
This initiative aligns with Pennsylvania's broader mission to strengthen community infrastructure by creating accessible public spaces crucial for work, education, and health needs.
