The Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord Jesus is formerly known as the Feast of the Three Kings. In the Western Christian church they have been commonly known as: Melchior (also Melichior), a Persian scholar; Caspar (also Gaspar, Jaspar, Jaspas, Gathaspa, and other variations), an Ethiopian scholar; and Balthazar (also Balthasar, Balthassar, and Bithisarea), an Arabian scholar. They offered three gifts with spiritual meaning: gold as a symbol of Jesus' kingship on earth, frankincense (an incense) as a symbol of Jesus' divinity, and myrrh (an embalming oil) as a symbol of Jesus' humanity through his death.
