Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar and Sen. Pat Stefano have announced that Somerset County will receive state grants totaling $265,000 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA).
Meyersdale Borough is set to receive $225,000 for the restoration of an eroded levee embankment, which currently leaves a significant portion of the borough's flood control system vulnerable to damage from the Casselman River during high-water events.
"Safety is paramount, and this funding allows Meyersdale Borough to restore the flood control system and safeguard the homes, businesses and families who depend on it," said Stefano.
The grant was awarded through CFA’s Flood Mitigation Program, which supports projects authorized by various authorities including a flood protection authority or identified by local governments for flood mitigation purposes.
"These grants will play a significant role in Somerset County’s future by preserving our safety and way of life," Metzgar stated. "I am pleased to see the importance of these projects recognized and subsequently funded."
Additionally, $40,000 has been allocated for constructing an amphitheater and stage at the Remember Me Rose Garden as a tribute to those who died in the September 11 attacks, particularly those aboard United Airlines Flight 93. The amphitheater will also serve as a venue for community events at the Flight 93 National Memorial.
"This project further advances Flight 93 National Memorial’s mission to preserve the memory of the brave individuals who tragically lost their lives while also creating a meaningful space for community events," Stefano noted. "The addition will help sustain ongoing operations of the Rose Garden."
Funding for this project comes through CFA’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program which supports developments in public parks and recreation areas.
All projects were funded through CFA, an independent agency within Pennsylvania's Department of Community and Economic Development that administers various economic development programs across Pennsylvania.
