Rep. Ryan Warner of Fayette responded to Governor Josh Shapiro's recent state budget address, where a $51.47 billion spending plan for the 2025-26 fiscal year was outlined. Warner criticized the proposal, stating, "For the third year in a row, the governor is failing to honor the most basic rule of budgeting…you can’t spend more than you bring in."

Warner expressed concern over the proposed increase in spending by $3.5 billion compared to the current fiscal year, despite revenue estimates being less than half that amount. He argued this would necessitate using reserve funds and creating new taxes. "That is both irresponsible and unsustainable," Warner commented.

He emphasized that the governor's plan is just a proposal and highlighted the importance of examining its details. Warner stated his intention to advocate for a budget that aligns with economic growth without burdening families and employers with higher taxes.

The House Appropriations Committee, which includes Warner as a member, will start three weeks of budget hearings with various state agencies beginning Tuesday, February 18.
