The bridge on East Campus Avenue over U.S. Route 219 in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, will soon bear a new name in honor of a local hero. The bridge is set to be designated as the Kenneth J. Newcomer Memorial Bridge. Kenneth J. Newcomer, a native of Jerome, was killed in action on October 9, 1944, in Belgium.

State Representative Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset) will lead the designation ceremony. Family members of Tec 5 Kenneth J. Newcomer and community members are expected to attend the event.

The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, November 15, at 2 p.m., and will take place at the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department located at 1885 Penn Ave., Jerome.
