Fayette County officials attended an introductory ceremony for the National Pike Water Authority’s (NPWA) recently completed Storage Tank and Control Upgrade Project, which will improve water service for several mountain communities.
Located just off state Route 40 in Markleysburg, the new, 330,000-gallon storage tank is located within an existing NPWA site containing two, 110,000-gallon tanks. The project’s control system upgrades included significant technological improvements across all NPWA sites.
The project began in May 2018 and was completed in July 2022, making it one of the authority’s longest and largest undertakings. NPWA received a $65,000 Local Share Account (LSA) Award from Fayette County’s annual grant program, which was used for the project’s initial engineering and permitting. The LSA grant was also leveraged as part of the authority’s $200,825 required funding match, which helped them secure $602,475 in federal Section 313 program funding.
NPWA Chairman Justin Frazee said the county’s LSA funding contribution significantly impacted the project.
“Without assistance from the LSA program, the NPWA would have needed to utilize other methods to cover our portion of the cost. The new storage tank is necessary for continued growth of the public water system,” Frazee said. “The storage tank serves needs for existing and future growth for both commercial and residential users in Markleysburg Borough and Henry Clay, Wharton and Stewart townships.”
In addition to NPWA members and the Fayette County Commissioners, state and federal legislative representatives, and officials from McMillen Engineering, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Fayette County Redevelopment Authority attended the ceremony Sept. 20.
